Great interest for Rana Husseini’s book ”Murder in the name of Honour”

01/03/2010 // The Jordanian journalist and writer Rana Husseini is well known internationally for her fight against honour killings of women. At the book signing for her latest release “Murder in the name of Honour” in Amman in February, the queue to get a signed copy was endless.

The Norwegian journalist, Jørgen Lohne representing the newspaper Aftenposten in the Middle East, was there to ask the author about her work. Husseini explained that important and positive changes have happened in Jordan the last couple of years – changes unseen in any other Arab country. The courts are giving severe sentences for honour killings of female relatives, up to 10 and 15 years. Husseini explains this by an increasing awareness amongst the prosecuting authority and the judges on the issue, but she also calls attention to the fact that the main problem remains, namely the dominating attitude within a large stratum of society that honour killings are accepted and even applauded.
