Norwegian delegation visits Jordan

Last updated: 03/03/2011 // The Standing Committee on Local Government and Public Administration from the Norwegian Parliament visited Amman in the period February 26th-28th. In addition to Jordan, the committee will also visit Syria and Lebanon.

During the Committee’s two-day visit in Jordan, they met with members of the Jordanian Parliament and several international NGO’s. The committee is, amongst other, responsible for immigration and integration issues in the Norwegian Parliament. The purpose of the visit was to get information on the current situation in the region regarding general aspects such as the security- and humanitarian situation, the situation for refugees and other vulnerable groups, migration, the human rights situation, and especially the situation for Palestinian refugees.

The Norwegian delegation and the Committee for Arab and International Affairs discussed the current situation in the Middle East as well as means of boosting cooperation between Norway and Jordan, especially in the parliamentary field. In their briefing with UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) the committee had the opportunity to learn about UNRWA’s work and they also got to visit a Palestinian refugee camp under the direction of UNRWA.

Despite a busy program, the delegation had time to see some of Jordan’s history during a visit to Jerash before heading to Syria.
